Just a reminder – the city is now monitoring the usage of the employee transit cards. At least one NOI was issued for misuse of the card. Each employee who received this benefit had to sign a statement acknowledging proper use of the card. Additionally, on the back of the card it states

“Conditions of use: Card is non-transferable. May be confiscated for misuse… Passengers without proof of fare payment or with an expired card may be issued a citation.”

Police Transit is confiscating the cards and notifying the employee’s department. The departments then issue the NOI’s. At this point, the disciplinary measure to be taken is undetermined, or if the City will choose to charge the employee with theft.

Please make sure that the card is only used by the employee to whom it was issued.

Disciplinary procedures are a part of every organization. Without these rules and regulations, equality and fairness in the workplace could not be achieved. However, as with any system of rules, there exists a procedure for their implementation.

The rules have rules, and they exist for your protection. The following are the five “golden rules” if you are ever faced with disciplinary action in your workplace.

Rule 1:

The moment a supervisor discusses possible discipline with you and has not offered you a union representative, notify your union steward or call the union office. Notify your union immediately when given discipline or bad PMG.

The Union office phone number is 602.254.3966. Do NOT wait.

Rule 2:

When given a Notice of Inquiry or possible discipline, do not discuss, email, or write a response to your supervisor until you have conferred with your union. Confer with a rep immediately.

Rule 3:

In a disciplinary matter, if questioned, tell your supervisor that you will need to check your notes to refresh your memory and will need to contact your union rep prior to responding.

Rule 4:

Nothing can go into your file without your signature. Do not sign any document without checking to see if it is disciplinary or can lead to discipline and if so request a union rep. Remember to get a copy of any documentation relating to a discipline matter.

Rule 5:

If you are in the middle of a grievance and the supervisor asks for a time extension for them to answer you, tell them to call your union rep for the extension. Do NOT grant it yourself.
